
A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck the northern foothills of the Himalayas near the city of Shigatse in Tibet on Tuesday. At least 95 people were killed and 130 injured in the quake that shook buildings in neighbouring countries including Nepal, Bhutan and India. According to the Regional Disaster Relief Center, the earthquake shook the Dingri district in Shigatse, Tibet Independent Region of China at 9:05 am (Beijing time) on Tuesday. The depth of the quake was 10 km (6.2 miles) as reported by the China Earthquake System Center, reports Reuters. At least 95 people were killed in the Tibetan part, national TV broadcaster CCTV reported. Tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR and some north Indian ranges, including parts of Bihar. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck at 6.35 am, 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche, near the Nepal-Tibet border.

According to the AP, CCTV said some communities were within 5 kilometers (3 miles) of the epicenter, which was 380 kilometers (240 miles) from the Tibetan capital Lhasa. At least half a dozen earthquakes of magnitude 4 to 5 were recorded within an hour around 7 am, USGS reports. Today’s quake was the most powerful recorded within a 200 km radius in the last five years. In 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Nepal killed nearly 9,000 people and injured over 22,000, destroying over half a lakh homes. Nepal lies on a major geographic faultline, where the Indian structural plate collides with the Eurasian plate.
